By now, it is no secret that sustainable packaging is becoming the expectation set by consumers. You may have noticed that some of your favorite brands have already made the switch, opting for less plastic and more composable shipping and packaging materials. While this can definitely raise expenses initially, it can actually save you and your company money in the long run.
In this article, I will explain why so many top brands are making the switch to more sustainable packaging and how opting for these small tweaks can help to boost your business.
One of the more obvious benefits of working towards more sustainable business practices is that it is kind to our planet. According to The Nature Conservancy, a carbon footprint is defined as the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions, such as production within an organization. By working to reduce our carbon footprint, we work towards improving the health of our planet and in the fight against global warming. This is a huge topic of concern right now and while it cannot be solved overnight, taking small steps can make a world of a difference. One example of this could be as small as opting for recyclable packaging filler instead of traditional filler (this is one of the small changes we've made at Lahlouh).
One of the key benefits of making the switch to more sustainable packaging is the reputation that follows. Today, consumers are more aware and concerned than ever about the impacts that their buying habits have on the environment as well as the sustainability practices of the companies that they support. Just opting for small tweaks within your business practices can really make all the difference for your company reputation, improvement of your CSR (corporate social responsibility), and not only help you to maintain loyal customers but attract them as well.
You might be thinking, how exactly could opting for the more expensive sustainable materials save me money? Well, I’m here to tell you. One of the ways that paying a little more upfront initially can prove to favor your wallet, in the long run, is by this: less unnecessary waste in your shipping and packaging materials = more savings for you! That’s right, when you move away from the traditional plastics and fillers you will see that it can eliminate an unnecessary expense from your budget. On top of that, it can cut down your shipping costs by removing unnecessary added weight! Savings all around, who doesn’t love that?
Here at Lahlouh, we are also working towards a more sustainable future. We have 2 types of packaging that we offer our clients.
Our structural engineers can help you create sustainable packaging using all paper-based products. This will make your packaging recyclable and/or compostable. We offer FSC certified substrates that ensure sustainable manufacturing and, in some cases, post-consumer recycled contents. In addition, our custom packaging will include inserts that eliminate the need for a plastic filler that will ultimately end up in landfills.
Once your products have been produced, we normally batch them before placing them in larger corrugate boxes for protection against damage during shipping. To make this process as sustainable as possible, we have brought on a Packsize Machine that creates custom on-demand packaging.
This allows us to create boxes to match the size of your product perfectly within minutes - reducing box sizes by up to a whopping 40%. What does this mean? An average 26% reduction in corrugate and 60% less plastic void fill- all while saving cost on freight!
